MBA TRIP SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa is in many respects a developed country, but much of its population lives in poverty. All major urban areas have modern, world-class hotels and tourist facilities. Game parks and areas most often visited by tourists have a wide range of facilities. Food and water are generally safe, and a wide variety of consumer goods and pharmaceuticals are readily available. The capital is Pretoria, while the seat of parliament is located in Cape Town. Johannesburg is the financial capital and the largest city in South Africa.
This evening we arrive at Johannesburg airport, where we will be met by our Tour Manager, who will assist with all the formalities. We will then transfer to our first class, centrally located hotel, where we will stay for three nights. Dinner tonight is included and will be at a local restaurant.
Today you will enjoy a full day sightseeing tour with an English-speaking guide. Among other sights, you will visit the Apartheid Museum and will take a sightseeing tour of Johannesburg and Soweto. Lunch will be provided at Sakhumzi or Nambitha.
Johannesburg, a city of astonishing contrasts and a huge metropolis where opulent wealth and desperate poverty live side by side, is the intriguing, dynamic heart of this turbulent country. Jo'burg, Jozi, eGoli or 'the city of gold' is by far the largest city in South Africa. It is brash, fast-growing, and often ugly, but it also boasts of wealth, energy and a beautiful climate.
Soweto is the most populous black urban residential area in the country. Thanks to its proximity to Johannesburg, the economic hub of the country, it is also the most metropolitan township in the country—setting trends in politics, fashion, music, dance, and language. From its very beginning, however, the township was a product of segregationist planning. It was created to house primarily black laborers who worked in mines and other industries in the city, so that they would be away from the center of the city. Soweto has also been a hotbed of many political campaigns, the most memorable of which was the 1976 student uprising.
This morning we visit various companies in the city. An air-conditioned deluxe bus will be provided to visit the companies.
In the afternoon, we will enjoy a visit to the Drum Café. The Drum Café has established itself as the authority on traditional African music. Synonymous with group drumming and interactive team-building, it is also one of Southern Africa's leading entertainment agencies. The Drum Café specializes in African traditional, modern and fusion performances and shows as well as custom-designed entertainment.
Dinner will be provided this evening at Moyo at Melrose Arch.
Day 4 |
JOHANNESBURG / GABORONE |
This morning we visit various companies in the city. A deluxe, air-conditioned bus will be provided.
In the afternoon, we will travel by bus to Gaborone (a 6-hour drive). Upon arrival in Gaborone, we will check in at our first class hotel where we will stay for two nights.
Botswana, a land of diverse beauties, is ideally located in the heart of South Africa. Its natural beauty lies in its wilderness, wildlife, and cultural diversity. Unique San rock art, geological wonders, and traditional art are additional attractions located in various parts of the country. Botswana offers a truly unique African experience.
Glaborone, the capital of Botswana, is named after Chief Gaborone, who led his tribe to this area from the Magaliesberg in 1880. When Botswana began to move towards independence in the early sixties, Gaborone was chosen as the site for the new capital due to its strategic location, the availability of a reliable water supply, and its proximity to the transcontinental railway line. The discovery of the country's diamond wealth in 1971 turned Botswana into one of the richest countries in Africa and the third largest producer of diamonds in the world. The National Museum in Gaborone is located near the center of town and houses important collections of traditional crafts and South African fine art.
Today we will visit organizations in Gaborone. A guide and a deluxe, air-conditioned bus will be provided.
Day 6 |
GABORONE / CAPE TOWN |
This morning we will visit organizations in Gaborone. Then you will be transferred by coach to Johannesburg International Airport to board your flight to Cape Town, South Africa. On arrival you will be transferred to your first class, centrally-located hotel, where you will stay for six nights.
The Mother City of Africa and the Western Cape as well as an area that is regarded as one of the most beautiful regions in the world, Cape Town is a city of culture that is built on a history that is reflected in its architecture, cuisine, music and dance. The city is a rare cultural gem, resulting from the amalgamation of Indonesian, French, Dutch, British, and German settlers; the local Bushman and Hottentots tribes; and the Bantu tribes from the north.
The entire day will be spent making visits to various companies in the city. An air-conditioned deluxe bus will be provided.
This morning we enjoy a trip to Table Mountain. The revolving cable car is the easy way to the top of this remarkable mountain. Your cable car ride gives stunning, extended views over Cape Town and its surroundings. Once on top, viewing decks that literally ‘hang’ visitors over the edge of the mountain offer spectacular photographic opportunities. The summit of the mountain
is marked by Maclear’s Beacon at 1067m. Even in clear weather, take a sweater or a windbreaker, as it tends to be cool at that altitude.
This morning our local guide will join us for an excursion tour of Robben Island.
Robben Island is most famous, or infamous, for having been the isolated prison of former South African President Nelson Mandela and many other black political dissidents. Today, former political prisoners act as your guides. The island is a World Heritage Site and home to African Penguins and a rich variety of marine bird life, some species of which are only found on the island.
Today we will enjoy a full-day sightseeing excursion to Cape Point, Boulders Beach, and Hout Bay.
It is off Cape Point that the Flying Dutchman—the phantom ship with its broken mast and tattered sails, is destined to sail the seas until the end of time. The legend originated in the 17th century, when the Dutch captain Hendrik van der Decken, his storm-tossed ship floundering, swore to round the Cape of Good Hope even if it took him until doomsday to do so.
Boulders Beach is a rocky stretch of coastline south of Simon’s Town and is home to the unique endangered South African Penguins.
Nestled in the shadows of the Karbonkelberg with the Sentinel standing guard is the village of Hout Bay. Originally known as Chapman’s Chance, it was Jan van Riebeeck who, in the 17th century, wrote about the finest forests in the world and named it Hout Bay (Wood Bay). Today Hout Bay is a popular tourist destination with its beautiful safe beaches, walking trails, horse-riding, arts and crafts, and wonderful historic sights.
Today you will have a full-day visit to Cape Winelands, where you will be visiting a number of estates and local companies. Dinner will be at Club Med at Clifton/Camps Bay.
The wine-producing region around Stellenbosch, sometimes known as the Boland, is only one of the important wine-growing regions in South Africa, but it is the oldest and most beautiful. The fertile green valleys of the Cape Winelands are surrounded by proud mountain ranges. Many historic homesteads and monuments can be found in the towns and villages, and every so often you will see fruit orchards that provide produce to every corner of the world. It is the Mediterranean climate and winter rainfall of the southwestern Cape that helps produce some of the best wines in the country.
